District Attorney Gratified at Lengthy Sentence in ‘Horrific’ Domestic Violence Case

Victim Hospitalized Seven Weeks

BIDDEFORD, Maine – York County District Attorney Kathryn Slattery has announced the conviction and sentencing of Michael A. Scott, 42, of Wells in connection with a domestic violence case involving elevated aggravated assault, kidnapping and criminal threatening that took place in Biddeford on Christmas Day in 2022 - a case she called horrific.

Slattery said Scott stabbed his female victim in the neck with a knife, strangled her to unconsciousness with a pillow, bound her with duct tape, burned her, held her against her will, and threatened to kill her. She sustained significant burns, and four of her fingers were amputated, the district attorney said in a news release.

The victim remained hospitalized for seven weeks recovering from her injuries, Slattery said.

Convicted at York Judicial Center in Biddeford on Sept. 4, Scott was recently sentenced by Justice James Martemucci to 26 years in prison, with all but 18 years suspended, followed by six years probation for his conviction on the domestic violence elevated aggravated assault conviction. Slattery said he was separately sentenced to 18 years and 10 years concurrently on the kidnapping and domestic violence criminal threatening convictions.

“We are grateful for the bravery of this victim of this horrific act of domestic violence,” said Slattery. “We are gratified that the court recognized the severity of the crime and sentenced the defendant to a lengthy prison sentence.”

Slattery said the York County District Attorney’s Office extends its appreciation and thanks to Biddeford Police Department, Sanford Police Department, Maine State Police Crime Lab, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and other organizations for their professionalism and work on the case.

“If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence, reach out to Caring Unlimited at 1-800- 239-7298,” she advised.
