Flag Waving and Cheers as Wreaths Across America ‘Escort to Arlington’ Passes Through York County

The Wreaths Across America “Escort to Arlington” passed through York County Monday morning, Dec. 11 and even though the rain was pouring down, some hearty souls stood on the sidewalk on Main Street (Route 1) in Kennebunk to wave a flag, like Kennebunkport resident Elizabeth Jordan.

The Wreaths Across America escort began with a sunrise ceremony in Lubec - Maine’s easternmost town – on Saturday, made its way to Portland on Sunday and began its journey down Route 1 through York County to waves and cheers along the way, stopping at York High School for a ceremony there before heading to New Hampshire and beyond.

The escort will end at Arlington National Ceremony, where wreaths will be placed on veterans’ graves on Saturday, Dec 16.

Locally, organizers say those wishing to attend a ceremony and help place wreaths on graves at Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery at 83 Stanley Road in Springvale that begins at noon Saturday should park at Pride Elementary School, 708 Main St. in Sanford and use the shuttle.

Rolling Thunder Chapter One, which is hosting the event, notes there are a limited number of handicapped parking spaces at the cemetery; all others should use the shuttles, which begin at 9:30 a.m., with the last shuttle to the cemetery leaving the school at 11:30 a.m.
