York County Staff Spotlight: Diane Handlen

Where did you grow up and go to school?

I grew up in Arundel and attended Biddeford schools.

How long have you worked for county government and in what capacities? What is your current title?

I have been with the York County District Attorney’s office for 34 years. I was a Legal Secretary from September 1990 to April 2023. I’ve worked in all four offices – Biddeford, York, Springvale and Alfred – which are now consolidated into one office in Biddeford, closer to the new, consolidated state court. I made a lateral move to the Victim Services Unit as a Victim Services Assistant within the district attorney’s office in April 2023.

What prompted you to decide to seek employment with York County government?

I’ve always been interested in criminal law and wanted to be either a police officer or legal secretary. I got both. While employed with York County, I also worked part-time as an officer at the South Portland Police Department for a couple of years.

What did you do before joining York County government?

I do not remember. It was too long ago.

What do you like most about your current job?

Learning new software programs, interacting with a variety of people, and always learning.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do?

You’ll usually find me working in my flower gardens or kayaking. I enjoy traveling and photography. My passion is being with animals. My favorites are dogs, goats, wolves, and horses. I have a 20-month-old black Lab named Madeleine and a couple of 14-year-old cats, Zulu and Phoebe, who are siblings. I’ve fostered many puppies for approximately nine years with a local rescue agency.
